Week 2- Barker, Chapter 3

Barker talks about the fundamental question of ideology in our society today: Ideology has usually been seen as the world views by which people live their lives, thus constituting their reality, but which is often imaginary and manipulated by the ruling class in order to exploit the people. Thus, ideology is often seen as counterpoised to reality or the truth. But, in a culture like ours today, wherein the true cannot be represented, wherein there is no universal truth, how can an ideology be opposed to or be a misrepresentation of reality? Our culture today seems to put restrictions on being able to say what is true reality. Thus, how can you name something as an exploitating ideology? Can’t that just be someone else’s reality? Honestly, I don’t really understand how we talk about the gospel in the midst of all of this relativity. Couldn’t the gospel be just dismissed as your ideology, but now it isn’t an ideology because it can’t be falsified because there is no absolute truth. Sorry, but this is confusing for me!

    It’s alright, that’s why we’re in class! Part of not dismissing the Gospel is what happens beyond the speech about the Gospel, but rather our explicit “signs” of how we live that message out. I think Wittgenstein is really useful here, that meaning within language isn’t just the words, it’s the actually bodily practices, and signs we use to communicate that meaning.
