Our conversation about hegemony was interesting. Advertising creates in us desires that we did not know we had, and expectations or “common sense” ideas that did not previously exist. Dominant culture creates in us an ideology in which we must consume certain things in order for things to “be right in the world.”
Additional thoughts: Does the church contribute to this in any way? Does the church at all convince people that they need certain things that they previously did not know they needed? Are these needs real or contrived?
